Janet Rayor won solos and lead roles from 3rd grade through high school, was one of three in her school to qualify for state classical choir, and began private vocal training at 11 yrs. She received a merit scholarship to attend Washington University in St. Louis. Still in her teens, she was accepted to NYU's Theatre program, NYC's Circle in the Square Summer Intensive, and Shakespeare & Company's intensive month study. She left college early to be a repertory member of a professional theater company in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She performed over a dozen leading singing and acting roles with rave reviews in Colorado. She's performed supporting roles with 5th Avenue Theater, Seattle Opera, Opera Pacifica, Broadway Performance Hall's Allegro!, and NOISE in the Northwest. Her French band, Rouge, plays popular nostalgic French music and for fifteen years has performed concerts, festivals, and fundraisers locally and nationally.

As a teacher, Janet has taught privately off and on for over twenty years. She's taught university workshops and been the vocal teacher for Summit High School's musicals, gaining the trust of students and teachers for her successful work with teenagers.

Lessons are an hour long, half technique and half applying to songs and interpretation. There is a voluntary sliding scale of $40-$50 individual, and $60 buddy lessons.

No one could give me long term relief to my aching neck and back. Janet figured out that I was breathing incorrectly and helped me learn to breath normally again. The pain disappeared! Janet's has an uncanny sense of seeing how I use my body. She plays with fun breathing and vocal exercises and together we find those that help me to breath and move with ease. I am so delighted with the results. No more pain in the neck! Janet heard me talking and told me that I wasn't using my voice correctly. My speaking voice was harsh and I had trouble talking loud enough to be heard over a crowd. When I did talk loud enough to be heard, I would become hoarse. Janet could tell what I was doing wrong and found ways for me to talk loudly with ease. Now I my voice is loud, clear and less harsh. It has even improved my self esteem. Fiddle Lessons

Ruthie Dornfeld has taught fiddling for 25 years, both privately and in workshops and classes at music camps and schools throughout the United States, Denmark, and Finland. She teaches all ages, beginning to intermediate levels, with the focus on general technique and repertoire building. In her own words: "We focus on staying relaxed and supple in a basically classical violin position, develop the ear to improve intonation, develop the rhythmic sense that is so crucial to dance fiddling, and learn some stylistic techniques such as ornamentation and bowing patterns. I teach primarily by ear, and the repertoire is traditional fiddle tunes of various genres according to the student's interest (old-time, Celtic, a bit of Scandinavian, French, and East European). I do teach music reading to those who are interested. I offer even non-music readers some music theory, so you can figure out what key you're playing in, some basic chords, scales, and arpeggios. I teach out of my home in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle."

Rates: $45 for a one hour lesson (recommended for adults) and $35 for a 45 minute lesson (recommended for kids)

Jazz Piano Lessons

Steve Rice is a creative and encouraging teacher who teaches in the Ballard area and through North Seattle Community College.

His interest in world music as a vehicle for jazz improvisation has resulted in performances and recordings with world music luminaries including Chassidic guitarist Yossi Piamenta, French electropop composer Jean Jaques Perrey, and Bollywood pop superstar Chandana Dixit.

Bass and Music Theory Lessons

Cary Black has taught music theory and improvisation for six years at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, and has taught upright bass for twenty years at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop.  He has also taught bass at the California Coast  Music Camp, Greater Yellowstone Music Camp, Bluegrass at the Beach, B.C. Bluegrass Workshop, Sound Acoustic Music Camp, and Wintergrass Academy.

Described by Alan Senauke in Sing Out! magazine as "a musician's musician," Cary is also a vocalist and producer who lives and teaches in Olympia, Washington.
